A Thriller Screenplay

SCENE 1

The movie opens. A hill station. There is a solitary bungalow at the top of a mountain. Full moon night.

A jeep comes and stops. A police inspector gets off. He approaches the door, which is unlocked. Goes up. There is a pretty girl, Ana, in a housecoat. She looks at him and smiles. He puts down a file and a briefcase. Opens it. Shows Ana the money and the contract. “This is it, honey. Sign here. It is ten million. Five for you and five for me!” He tells her that there is no need to go to the court the next day to give the autopsy report. He then asks for the beer. Ana replies that it’s in the fridge, and that she would join him in a while after her shower.

Cut to the bathroom.

Ana opens the faucet. Shower comes low angle onto the camera. Outside, the police inspector opens the beer. Suddenly, we notice someone moving out of the window. From the stranger’s point of view the camera moves around, as he is peeping into the house.

The phone rings. In the bathroom, Ana hears it and screams for her boyfriend. It keeps on ringing. Ana puts on her housecoat. While she is still putting it on, she comes out and picks up the phone. There is a mysterious voice, which takes her name. ‘Hello, Ana! I will give you a chance to live. There are three questions. You answer them right, you live. Or you will die.” A stunned and puzzled Ana slams the phone down. She runs to the drawing room shouting for her boyfriend, the inspector. “Mac! Mac! There is a crank call!”

In the eery breezy night, the phone rings again. Hesitatingly, Ana picks it up. “Mac is not there. He is no more!”

Behind a shaking Ana, we hear a creaking sound. She turns around and finds Mac hung from the ceiling fan. It was the creaking of the rope that she had heard. Aghast, Ana screams. The voice in the phone, still held by Ana, says, “Now you know I am serious. Three questions, honey. Answer them, you live. Or you die!”

Ana is trembling. Her hands are shaking. She starts to sweat. “First question,” the voice says, “for whom did Shahjahan make the Tajmahal?” Ana starts to stammer. “I’ll ask you only once more. The question for ten million. For whom did Shahjahan make the Tajmakahl?” She stutters. “M…Mumtaz.” “Correct answer! We go to the second one. What did Shahjahan do to the workers who made the Tajmahal?” She stutters and manages to say, “…h..he cut their hands.” “Right again, honey. Now, the third answer. For your life. Right, you get the ten million and you live. Wrong answer, and you die.”

SCENE 2

Outside a small pub. We introduce Tom, the hero sidekick, and Julia, a girl with glasses, slightly plump. They both shake hands and congratulate each other for having won the college scholarship.

The door opens. Tom goes to the drums to play. A song starts. The mood is we will conquer the world. We will be successful. As the song builds up, the door breaks open midway. The don’s nephew, Vicky, enters with some henchmen. They take over the instruments and continue to play. Vicky makes a pass at Julia. The songs stops. Vicky tells Tom that since he hadn’t paid the money, he was forced to come here. Tom seems to be very scared of Vicky. He begs Vicky to talk to him somewhere alone, as there’s something important he needs to tell Vicky. But Tom’s request is shunned.

Vicky signals to his henchmen, and they proceed towards Julia. They eye her up and down smilingly, and tell her that their boss has taken a liking for her. Just then, Tom enters from behind sans Vicky. The henchmen get alarmed and ask for their boss. Tom says Vicky is inside and they have made a deal that Julia has to leave with Vicky. Now it’s Julia’s turn to be alarmed. She asks Tom what the matter is. Tom replies that in return for the payments, Julia has to go to Vicky. Saying this, he drags her hand. Julia relents and suspecting something, eyes him questioningly. Tom quietly whispers to her that in their encounter Vicky has died. Tom tells Julia to hurry up as they are in trouble.

Tom rushes Julia into a room where Vicky’s dead body is kept. He tells her to help him cover the body. They lift the body, put it on a trunk and cover it with a sheet. Just then, the henchmen barge in and start asking for Vicky. A composed Tom tells them that he has gone through the back door and has ordered them to follow. As Tom is talking to the henchmen, one arm of the dead body falls down and Julia manages to cover it just in time. After the unsuspecting henchmen leave, the two heave a sigh of relief. They run out.

Dissolve.

SCENE 4

The rooftop of a bus. Tom, Julia and their friend Sammy are on top of the bus heading towards the mountains. There is a tarpaulin on the bus. The three are talking to each other that they have to be careful because the news is out and there might be a check-in anytime. They also mention that the bus in on its way from Colorado to Miami. As they say that, a hand slides out from the tarpaulin, behind Julia. She looks at it and screams.

Up gets Henry. He smiles, looks at all and tells them that he is sleeping there because he likes travelling without ticket. “But what’s your need to sit on the rooftop of a bus? Looks like you are on the run from the law!” The three look nervously at each other and say with a start, “Oh no! We are on a holiday and are going to join the fashion and design college of Miami.”
